Period 1 Group 7: Artificial Intelligence (Sarah Bien and Amanda Li)

The Three Laws of Robotics:

1: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm;

2: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would
conflict with the First Law;
3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law;

The Zeroth Law: A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.”
― Isaac Asimov, I, Robot

Artificial intelligence encompasses the ability of technology to perform tasks that would have previously required human intelligence.  We picked Artificial intelligence as our topic because it is a subject that appears frequently in science fiction, and it is a field of technology that is gaining attention and influence.  Artificial intelligence can help people become more efficient, but it can also have devastating effects if it is used without constraint.  Many forms of this technology exist today, such as Siri, an intelligent personal assistant on Apple’s iOS; Watson, the computer that won on Jeopardy; certain robots; even the recommendation programs on websites like Youtube, Amazon, or Pandora.  However, there is a lot of debate on the restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence especially regarding its use in warfare.  Currently, drones are controlled by men on the ground, but if artificial intelligence were to control the drones instead, the decisions would lie between saving our own soldier’s lives and being more efficient versus the possibility of attacking innocent civilians - a precedent of other countries attacking the US - and our own drones being hacked and used against us.
