Harvard and MIT recently developed a technology very close to lightsabers. Until now, photons (mass less particles of light) were thought not to interact. However, scientists at Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms recently coaxed these photons into hardened particles you can hold. This is the closest we have come to the movie like lightsabers. This solidly enhances my belief that real life light sabers are possible in the not too distant future.
